Preparation is the one of the keys to great nail polish. Its not difficult to get a great finish and great looking nails. Before you start make sure you have everything you will need to hand. Nail varnish, nail varnish remover and moisturiser are the most obvious things. You will also need some cotton pads, emery boards, cuticle sticks and just as importantly time. Rushing the application of your nail polish could mean it takes longer than normal as well as the finish itself not lasting as long as it could.
If you have any previous nail polish residue on your nails remove this using nail polish remover on one of the cotton pads. Try where possible to limit nail varnish remover use to once a week to rest the nails from the chemicals. By using a remover that does not contain acetone or alcohol you will help prevent nails from drying out and the nail varnish chipping.
Now you can tidy up and neaten your nails appearance by using an emery board, cuticle trimmer and nail scissors. To prevent the nail tip from flaking only ever file your nails in one direction. Whilst doing this its also a great time to apply some cuticle oil to soften the nails as well.
Soak and wash hands thoroughly to prevent the dust from the filing, residue from the nail varnish remover ruining the new varnish and to soften your cuticles (the skin that naturally overlaps your nails) as natural oils prevent nail polish from staying on this area. Using paper towels to dry hands will prevent lint from cotton towels being deposited on your nails, ruining the final finish.
It is best to apply the nail polish in a few thin layers rather than one thick layer. Wipe the brush on the side of the pot, avoiding painting the cuticle and with your hand flat brush it on quickly with one or two strokes. Any slight unevenness at this point will soon become a smooth surface. Only apply the nail polish near to but not on the nails edge and once the first layer is fully dry apply another layer the same way.
Once applied keep you hand as still as possible to prevent smudging to the nail polish but if you do get any on the skin around your hand a small amount of nail polish remover on a cotton bud can be used to gently rub the affected area. If you want a bit more precision at this point you can always wrap some cotton wool around a cuticle stick.
